Most people think that Turmeric is just an ingredient found in curries. But little do they know that Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a natural painkiller, antacid, stress reliever, anti-inflammatory and infection fighter. The health properties of Turmeric are amazing for the body and it is readily available in the herb section of most supermarkets.

Turmeric has many health benefits and has been used across Asia for its medicinal properties for a long time. Here are some of those benefits:

Pain relief: 

Many people who have used Turmeric have noticed that it reduces the feeling of pain. This happens by Turmeric blocking the pain receptors in certain areas. Turmeric can relieve arthritis pain and common everyday pains like muscle soreness and headaches. Around 800mg is recommended for pain relief.


The Arthritis Foundation found that turmeric had the capacity to reduce inflammation in those suffering with arthritis. The Arthritic Foundation now recommends that those with arthritis should take 400 to 600mg of turmeric three times a day. Turmeric can help to relieve inflammation around joints, organs and muscles.

Prevent cancer and fight free radicals:

Curcumin found in turmeric, can help combat the development of cancer and fight free radicals. Research is in its early stages but results have been promising. 

Better digestion:

Of course Turmeric is famous for being found in Asian cuisines. It can help reduce indigestion, reflux, gas, gut inflammation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Improve liver function:

Turmeric is packed with antioxidants which can improve liver function. It can also help to heal the livers of those who have been through drug or alcohol abuse.

The University of Maryland Medical Center has created a turmeric dosing guideline. Here are the recommended daily turmeric doses:

• Cut root: 1.5 to 3 g per day
• Dried, powdered root: 1 to 3 g per day
• Standardized powder (curcumin): 400 to 600 mg, three times per day
• Fluid extract: (1:1) 30 to 90 drops a day
• Tincture: (1:2) 15 to 30 drops, four times per day
