When choosing a pair of boxing gloves, one of the decisions you will have to make is whether to go with synthetic (vinyl) or leather gloves. When deciding, you need to have a clear understanding of the positives and negatives of either style of glove.
Synthetic gloves are mainly used by newbies or those who are unsure as to whether they’ll continue with the sport or fitness style.
The benefits of vinyl gloves are that they are an entry level product, inexpensive and therefore easy to throw away. The negatives of vinyl are that your vinyl gloves are not very durable so the padding disintegrates quite quickly, often within weeks to months of 3 times a week use. Vinyl doesn’t get rid of moisture very easily, so your hands heat up quickly making training uncomfortable and…this in turn makes your gloves smell really badly.
Leather gloves are always the choice of people who live for boxing, for a number of reasons.
The benefits of leather is that it is a far more durable material so your gloves will last much, much longer and not wear away anywhere near as quickly. This is of particular importance because in a typical boxing fitness class, you don’t just punch the whole time – you also perform bodyweight exercises where your gloves need to be in direct contact with the floor. The more durable the material of your gloves, the more resistant they will be to scuffing on rough floors from bodyweight exercises.
Leather is more breathable, making your gloves far more comfortable for you to use and won’t smell as much – compare the smell of your leather shoes to your runners.
Leather gloves will cost more, but are worth the investment.
Although leather gloves will last for years, as a precaution I always recommend that you replace your leather gloves every 2 years if you box 3 times a week or more.
Vinyl or leather bag mitts are typically thinly padded resulting in pain and injury. For your own safety, never use bag mitts in your boxing classes.
When purchasing quality boxing gloves women should use no less than a 12oz glove and men a 16oz glove. Always check that your boxing gloves are of a reputable brand and ‘true weight’ meaning that if you purchase a 16oz glove, it will weigh 16oz and not less – i.e. you won’t be cheated on padding.
