Santo was born in Sicily in 1956 and commenced Martial Arts training, specifically Go Ju Japanese Karate at age 15 after being severely bullied at school. Santo achieved Black Belt status just prior to his 18th birthday and commenced as an instructor in 1973. He continued instructing for a period of over 25 years establishing 21 schools under the Bob Jones Corporation, comprising over 1000 students.

During his career Santo has won numerous competitions including Victorian Black Belt tournament in 1976, Black Belt of the Year – Bob Jones Corporation 1977, Amateur Victorian Champion in Kumite (Fighting in the ring) in 1978 and was Australian Champion in Kata 1978 – 1981 and he retired as champion. Santo currently holds the rank of 8th Dan.

During the late 1970s to late 1980s Santo was in high demand both nationally and abroad, in particular in New Zealand as a seminar speaker and special guest, teaching technical refinement for senior instructors and in particular specialised weapons training.

In addition to teaching Karate, Santo in collaboration with other colleagues, was instrumental in developing and introducing self defence classes for women and children in the early 1980's and continues to be an industry leader in this area. Santo loves teaching self defence: “The self defence classes are very practical and high energy but we always have lots of fun and heaps of laughs.”

  • Here's what previous participants had to say about Santo's self defence classes:

As a practicing Martial Artist, I found Santo’s self defence classes really exciting. Despite years of Karate training the techniques taught in the class were really simple and I believe would be more effective on the streets. It really changed my attitude about how simple techniques can be more effective than all our fancy stuff. This class has reignited my passion for self defence training. Luca Galanti (2nd Dan Black Belt)

I loved the simplicity of the movements and how they are in harmony with our natural body movement. The high intensity at the end when it all comes together was lots of fun and I was pumped. Thank you Santo, I can’t wait to practice, although I am not looking for a fight! Kiel Donato

Really informative and the application of simple realistic techniques. The teaching and class interaction was non threatening which really allowed me to relax. I enjoyed every bit and can’t wait to go home and share my new knowledge with my family and friends. I would highly recommended everyone regardless of age or fitness level to attend this class. Frank Donato

As an average woman who is not very fit, I am always a little nervous when walking alone at night or in an isolated park. I now feel so much more confident and will react to situations very differently in the future. I find it fascinating that to be safe you often need to work against your natural reaction to pull away. This class was so much fun, I want more. Robyn McKenzie
